Szymanowski’s Symphonie Concertante (Symphony No. 4, Opus 60: First Movement

"Indeed, to be properly interpreted and enjoyed, the highest productions of music demand the wholly undivided and undistracted attention of the mind so that it may surrender itself to, and become absorbed in, them in order thoroughly to understand its incredibly and profound and intimate language." Metaphysics of the Beautiful and Aesthetics

Szymanowski is one of my favorite composers. This symphony requires so much attention, but in a generous way for me, definitely commands it. The pizzicato pulse in the strings that opens the song draws you in and really organically, new sound objects appear. The musical texture in every moment of this song is so rich--but Szymanowski's instrumentation allows for each section to be purposeful and not just blend into the sound. The weight of the sound is so dense at times that the moments of silence really matter.
