In Defense of Music
I chose to write about an artist I know next to nothing about, but she creatively post-engineered the record with its live instrumentation. The song helped me meditate on troubling worldly events and encouraged me to clean up my ipod (still in progress).

Bieber
Hi Everyone,
For the essay I submitted today, I wrote about Justin Bieber's "Baby," featuring Ludacris. I like this song for multiple reasons. It's catchy, relatable, aspirational, and it's a great song to leave in the background while I think about other things.
Although Bieber draws criticism from many sources, overall most people agree with me. With 537 million views and counting, "Baby" is the most viewed YouTube video of all time.

Thanks, everyone, for a great semester. I really enjoyed this class!

Final Assignment: Adele
After struggling with the music I wanted to write about, I decided to choose a contemporary artist with a powerful voice. Adele's albums I believe are an exception to the popular songs Adorno detested. By reasoning through Barthe's conception of the "grain" of the voice, popular music can be more than a tool for escape. Thus, her voice, not traditional pop-song gimmicks won me over.
Further comment:She will be performing in Berkeley in June.
The Honest Grain of Hardcore as Music of the Heart

4. Title Fight, "Symmetry," audio track
5. Have Heart, "The Same Sun," audio track

Pleasure in Pain: Nirvana and Embodiment
"The merest schoolgirl, when she falls in love, has Shakespeare and Keats to speak her mind for her; but let a sufferer try to describe a pain in his head to a doctor and language at once runs dry." - Virginia Woolf, "On Being Ill"
Post for Final
Queen- Bohemian Rhapsody
I chose to write on Adorno's Popular Music in his Introduction to the Sociology of Music. In it he brings up the idea of the 'evergreen hit' which is one that seems to have an ageless quality.

Unconscious Listening
For the purposes of my essay, I couldn't find a 'shareable' form of the song without any visual content, so I've embedded here a version with the least visuals possible for Youtube.
Additionally, since it is noted in the essay, here is the sample by Lupe Fiasco (again considered alongside the essay, the visual element should be excluded):
